Running Simple
We’ve all heard the acronym K.I.S.S. “Keep It Simple Stupid”, but you may not know that this phrase has been around since the 1960s when it was used by the U.S. Navy while designing and repairing jet aircrafts. I have to remind myself of this phrase often, ‘cause I pretty much ALWAYS overcomplicate things when it comes to creating. Like for instance when I’m quilting, I always have too many colors, too many mixed prints, and try to make the pattern waaaay too complicated.
I’m lucky that my other half wholeheartedly embraces simplicity. He’s got a serious love for modern minimalism and reminds me that “less is often more”. As a former art major, and current machinist, woodworker, and designer he’s a constant reminder that simplicity is key.
So let’s K.I.S.S, alright?!
At WorkWear Community, we’re focused on three main pillars: Intentional, Classic, & Inspirational. Let’s just focus on the “Intentional” piece for now. We are intentionally deciding to keep it simple. We know that personally, for us, simple is better. We could get bogged down in the number of pockets, finishes, and features, but we’re going to give you juuuuust what you need and nothing that you don’t. Don’t worry though, functionality is still Queen.
When I was working in the field this summer the most I ever carried on my body was chapstick and a kleenex, a harvest knife, and twist ties. When I’m in my own garden it’s usually hand pruners or a pair of scissors. I know that I’m not the only one like this, so for you ladies, I think we’ve got what you need.
As I continue to create WorkWear’s first collection with my pattern maker, it’d be so easy for me to get caught up in thinking that more is better and that every single piece of clothing has to have every feature on it. I often think to myself, “but what if someone doesn’t buy my pants ‘cause they don’t have a hammer loop?!” Well, ya’ know what? That probably will happen. I am 100% a people pleaser, but even I know that I’ll never be able to please everyone. Some women will prefer a different fabric, or pocket configuration, or fit. Some women will want at least a dozen functional pockets and more. But some women will prefer WorkWear <<fingers crossed>> 😉.
So, let’s get rid of the cumbersome and uncomfortable. Let’s get rid of the traditional workwear aesthetic and create something that speaks to the beauty of simplicity. And I’ll just keep reminding myself that, "It seems that perfection is reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."- Antoine de Saint Exupéry
